Shantiniketan tour for 2 Days- Day 1
A place that is known for its Serenity and Calmness, a land of greatness which was created by Maharsi Debendranath Tagore and Rabindranath Tagore (the greatest poet of all time). A place rich in Culture, Heritage and Education which lays in the midst of nature is a must visit to enjoy the peace and calmness away from all the boisterous hustle and bustle of the city life. Shantiniketan's mesmerizing views starting form the Viswa Bharati to Kopai, form Prakriti Bhawan to Sonajhuri Haat will blow your mind away.
As soon as you enter in the land of heritage you will be welcomed by the serene nature itself in the form of beuatiful flowers; coloured with the gorgeous sunset hues known as Palashful (in bengali), Rangamati(redsoil)and big old trees surrounding the whole area. The giant heritage and culture attracts tourists from all over the world.
HOW TO REACH SHANTINIKETAN
By Train- The best way to reach Shantiniketan is by train. There are many trains available from Sealdah, Kolkata and Howrah to Prantik or Bolpur which is 2kms away form Shantiniketan. It would take approximately 3 hours to reach there.
By Road- Buses are available from various cities in all over West Bengal. The distance from Kolkata to Bolpur is approximately 163kms, after you reach there you can book an e-rikshaw to reach Shantiniketan form Bolpur .Ticket charges are at a very nominal rate. Book your Bolpur tickets from here.
WHEN TO VISIT
The best season to visit is during the Basanta Utsav and Poush Mela. The place will be full of people during these times so you can expect a heavy crowd in the month of December and March, as these two months showcases the culture and heritage of Shantiniketan.
To avoid the crowd, we selected to go during the month of July as it is pretty quiet and calm during this time. This sesason will be perfect for the visitors who don't want any hustle bustle during their visit and can spend quality time peacefully.
WHERE TO STAY
You can find many hotels and homestays in the area. But we would suggest to stay at Prantik if you want seclusion. We stayed at a bunglow booked through Airbnb and it costed around 2500 per day. The whole bunglow was ours for two days, the lip-smacking meals were prepared by the caretaker. Here are the few mesmerizing views of the beautiful bunglow.
WHERE TO VISIT
Tips- Make sure you come during the weekends as you don't want to miss the Sonajhuri Haat on Saturday.
Day 1- We arrived at Shantiniketan on Friday and stayed in Prantik. In the afternoon we rented an E-rikshaw(eco-friendly) for the whole day, which costed around Rs. 600 which was budget friendly as well. And our first stop was Prakriti Bhawan.
The entry fee is Rs.30 only and for photography you have to pay Rs. 20.
Commonly known as Katum Kutum by Abanindranath Tagore, shows everyday life through the nature itself.
Our second stop on Day 1 was Srijani Shilpagram Complex , it is a huge area decorated with beautiful replicas and architecture of houses from various parts of India. You can also buy some beautifully handmade crafts made by local craftsmen from there. This place has abundance of greenery and locally crafted cultural beauty.
Here are some beautiful pictures of Srijani Complex that will soothe your soul.
The whole area is maintained by EZCC(Eastern Zonal Culturtal Centre).
The third and final stop for day 1 was Kopai Nodi(Kopai River) which reminds me of Rabindranath Tagore's famous poem.. Amader Nodi Chole Ake Bake. The tranquility of that palce is immesurable, while winding up the day we spent almost two hours at the bank of Kopai and watched the beautiful sunset while sipping to a cup of bhad-er-cha (tea served in earthen pots) and sunk into our own thoughts in peace.
As it was the month of July the river was a little bit on the drier side, but you can be assured of the peace and calmess that you will get during the off-seasons rather than visiting during March and December.
This is the end of our first blog the next blog will be on the journey of Day 2, so stay tuned.
